Renewable Wind Power

Renewable wind energy is gaining in popularity as the world attempts to practice “green living”. One of the biggest benefits to wind power electricity is the financial savings that can occur on your utility bill. What exactly is wind generated electricity and how will the advantages of wind power work for you and your home?

Renewable wind energy is actually derived from solar energy. As the sun warms various parts of the earth, the warm air rises and the motion the air creates moves a mechanical form known as a wind turbine. Wind power turbines transform the kinetic energy formed from the air’s motion to mechanical energy that can be harnessed for personal or business use.

How much power can one wind turbine generate? Typically, electricity is measured in watts, but that unit of measurement is so small, the terms kilowatts (kW – 1,000 watts), megawatts (MW – 1 million watts), and gigawatts (GW – billion watts) are more often used when measuring the wind power electricity. To measure usage, we will use the term kilowatt-hour (kWh). For example, a 50-watt light bulb that burns for 20 hours would use 1 kWh (50 watts x 20 hours = 1,000 watt-hours = 1 kilowatt-hour).

Size and speed assist in determining the output of renewable wind energy, but the range is usually between 250 watts to 5 MW. That may not sound like much at first, but the average American family only uses 10,000 kW a year. An 10-kW is not unusual and with 12 mi/hr winds, it could great enough wind generated electricity for your home for the entire year.

What can you expect in terms of wind power cost? Due to the technology available in your area, many US locations average 5-7 per kWh, however wind power energy is available in most countries worldwide. We thoroughly recommend checked with your local power supplier to see if the have the option to harness wind power. Otherwise, you may want to look into your own transformers or opting for solar power.

We will continue to update this site with different tips and tricks on how to best use renewable wind energy. In the meantime, if you would like to learn a number of methods to help you save on your utility bills now, check out Earth4Energy
